Council of Deans of Nursing: Senior Colleges and Universities in New York State

Records of the Council of Deans of Nursing document the group’s activities from its establishment in 1969. Primarily meeting materials and correspondence, the records have been maintained by the current chairperson. Bylaws and materials on selected topics of interest to the group are also included. Minutes of meetings of the predecessor group, the Conference of Deans and Directors, is included for 1964-68. These records chronicle issues of interest to nurse educators in New York state for the past thirty years. Several nationally prominent nurse educators have served as chairperson of this group.

Administrative History

The Council of Deans of Senior Colleges and Universities in New York State (subsequently referred to as The Council) began in 1963. Educators from universities, baccalaureate and community colleges, diploma schools of nursing and practical nursing schools – while acknowledging their differences – recognized their common bonds as educators of the next generation of nurses. Representatives from each of these educational disciplines came together to serve on the New York State Nurses Association Committee on Education. The Council is one of those independent representative groups.

The Council identified three organizational objectives in their 1964 Bylaws: Identification of common experiences and issues; Research and analysis of current information and data as a foundation for decision-making; and Effective leadership in the planning and implementation of collaborative programs.

Scope and Contents Notes

This collection includes meeting minutes from the inception of the organization in 1964 through 1998 and correspondence between its member institutions, legislators and affiliating organizations such as NYSNA and the New York State Department of Education.
