History & Endowment of the Center for Public and Professional Education

In 1988 the Board of Trustees of the Center for Nursing established the Center for Public and Professional Education (CPE) which is dedicated to improving health, health consciousness, and public understanding and utilization of the services of professional nurses. The CPE’s primary goals are to monitor the public’s perceptions of and responses to professional nursing services and promote direct public-nursing interaction through health education programs provided by professional nurses. The CPE, like the Alumnae Association of St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing, has a proud history of strong commitment to the consumers of nursing and health care.

The Goals of the CPE are:

  • To address the nursing faculty shortage along with nursing retention and recruitment;
  • To promote public education; and
  • To promote the visibility and understanding of the CPE within the nursing community and the public at large.

For many years the CPE has served the Capital Region with the Linking Education, Nurses, and Seniors (LENS) program. The LENS program was created in collaboration with District 9 of the New York State Nurses Association. The LENS program provides a multitude of health education programs to seniors across New York State.

The St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing has a long and distinguished heritage characterized by its commitment to excellence in patient-centered care and to exceptional quality care. St. Luke’s Alumnae are justifiably proud of their history of longstanding commitment to patients and patient-centered care and their contribution to the health and wellbeing of individuals and their families and to the nursing profession itself. St. Luke’s Alumnae’s collective support for, and commitment to, patient care and service are extraordinary and deserve enduring recognition.

In 2007, the CPE was endowed by the St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae for one million dollars with generous gifts from their alumnae and supporters. In recognition of the endowment, the CPE was renamed to The St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Center for Public and Professional Education. The endowment to the CPE serves as a continuation of its distinguished tradition of public service and professional excellence. The St. Luke’s Alumnae Association and the Center for Nursing’s CPE share a mutual vision of improvement of the health and wellbeing of the public. This shared vision will continue because of the Alumnae Association’s endowment of the CPE.
