Administrative History

The Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing (SON) was incorporated in June of 1896 and was located on 8th

The Hospital was established to meet the needs of the community, doubling in capacity over the years to meet the requirements of the community. In 1914 the hospital moved to Burdette and Peoples Avenues, its current location. In 1920, new rooms were added for teaching nursing, as well as a pharmacist being added to the staff. Over the following forty years the school would continue to grow adding up to date nursing facilities for the newest nursing techniques. Wings were added as well as clinics and beds.

War is listed as a large reason for the need and development of these nursing schools including the Spanish-American War of the late eighteen hundreds that left veterans needing nursing care. The creation of the Samaritan Hospital SON “can be attributed to a great community need for institutional and scientific care to its war veterans and casualties returning from the war.” [2] Its mission was to teach the best possible bedside nurses.

For a more complete history see Leora E. Belknap’s “History and Development of Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing” in the access file.
