The Center’s Board of Trustees established the Center for Nursing Research (CNR) in 1989 in response to recommendations resulting from a two year nursing research initiative co-sponsored by the Center, the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA), and the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society (STTI). At that time they stated, “The Foundation Board of Trustees has a vision that the CNR could become the cornerstone of progress for the nursing profession during these critical times, and, indeed, throughout the profession’s continuing evolution.” The value of this center for the practice of nursing is to support the identification and use of best practices as found in the scientific research of nurses and other professionals.


The mission of the Cathryne A. Welch Center for Nursing Research (CNR) is to advance excellence in health care through research and evidence based practice (EBP).


  • To position the CNR to obtain resources to actualize its mission;
  • To catalyze innovation and inquiry through support of the research alliances and other entities that promote advancement of excellence in health care; and,
  • To provide stewardship for the on-going development of nurse-scientists

  1. Expand the human, technological and financial infrastructure that is currently available to support research;
  2. Facilitate collaboration among all stakeholders in the research endeavor to promote sharing of expertise, mentoring of novices, and coordination of resources in order to improve patient care;
  3. Create learning opportunities for nursing students and professional nurses to enhance their understanding of research and their ability to apply research findings to practice;
  4. Disseminate research findings and best evidence-based practices to members of the nursing profession and the community at large;
  5. Promote the use of research findings and evidence-based best practices to solve clinical problems and influence health care policy.


Structural plan of the CNR

Purpose: The proposed structural plan incorporates a leadership team and standing subcommittees which support the mission and values of the CNR and, through the strategic plan, operationalizes the vision and goals of the CNR through the work of the Leadership Team and Subcommittees.  This structure represent the interests of, and serve as conduits to, identified constituent groups.

Accountability:  to the Center for Nursing Board of Trustees (BOT)

Scope of work:  scope is carried out through the work of the subcommittees

  • Providing a collegial forum for sharing amongst the research alliances and other identified constituencies
  • Assist in collaborative efforts of the research alliances and other identified  constituencies in NYS
  • Make recommendations to the BOT in support of the mission
  • Serve as a liaison between other professional constituencies in and outside of NYS with an interest in nursing research and evidence based practice (EBP)

Functions: To operationalize the strategic plan, collaborate with research alliances and other professional entities, to mentor research fellows, to recognize excellence in research accomplishments in NYS, dissemination of research evidence, and support fundraising efforts for the CNR

Participation in the CNR

  • The composition of the CNR will include individuals with Master’s and Doctoral preparation who have expertise in nursing research or expertise and/or leadership in Evidence Based Practice.
  • Participation is open to those who share an interest in nursing research and evidence based practice. Participants may choose to join subcommittees or to remain part of the CNR only.
  • Participation is also intended to be representational of constituent groups and organizations.  Participant may be recommended by such groups to serve on the CNR and/or subcommittees.
  • All participants of the CNR enjoy equal status as full participant without regard to their source of appointment.
