Administrative History
In 1983, Psychiatric/ Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialists decided to form peer network to discuss issues affecting those nurse who provided care for clients with psychiatric and mental health issues. Out of their concerns arose the Network of Clinical Specialists in Mental Health-Psychiatric Nursing. The Network was connected to Adelphi University and later New York University. Early in the 21st century, the group changed its name to The Network of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing. Two nurses instrumental to the formation of this organization are Burton Thelander, PMHCNS-BC, NE-BC, and founding president, Susan Cohen, PhD, RN, CS. The group disbanded in mid-2005.

The early minutes reflect the original name of this organization: Network of Clinical Specialists in Mental Health-Psychiatric Nursing. The later minutes reflect the new name: The Network of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing. Because of a gap in the accessioned minutes, the exact year of this name change is not recorded at this time. This series also contains correspondence of founding president, Susan Cohen.
